چکیده

Professor Don Luckey identified the phenomenon of “radiation hormesis,” and he described it in a paper in the Health Physics Society Journal, in 1982. (He also authored two books on this subject.) CRIEPl initiated a research program on radiation hormesis following this publication to confirm, "Is it true or not?" After nearly ten years of research activities on data surveys and animal tests with many universities, we are realizing the scientific truth of bio-positive effects caused by low-level radiation exposures. The interesting bio-positive effects we found could be categorized in the following five groups: • Rejuvenation of cells, such as increase of SOD and cell membrane permeability, • Moderation of psychological stress through response of key enzymes, • Suppression and therapy of adult diseases, e.g., diabetes and hypertension, • Suppression of cancer through enhancement of immune systems, such as lymphocytes, • Suppression of cancer and radio-adaptive response by activation of DNA repair and apoptosis.

Effects of N-acetylcysteine on life shortening induced by chronic low dose-rate gamma-ray exposure in mice

Background: The development of methods to alleviate radiation-induced health effects is important for the practical use of radiation therapy and for understanding the molecular mechanisms mediating these effects. Here, we examined the protective capability of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on life-shortening effects induced by continuous low dose-rate gamma-ray exposure in mice. Materials and Methods: ...

Evaluation of the level of fear of radiation among radiology staff in hospitals affiliated to Hamadan University of Medical Sciences, Iran, in 2014

Background: The biological effects of radiation on radiology personnel are divided into two groups of deterministic effects and stochastic effects. Due to the effects of radiation on health, radiology staff may be afraid of radiation. Younger personnel with little work experience, compared with older personnel, have higher level of fear. The fear among radiology personnel, like employees of var...

The Impact of Low-level Exposure to Radiation in Natural Ecosystems of Najaf and Dhi Qar Cities, Iraq

Introduction: This study investigated the exposure rates of background radiations in selected locations of Najaf and Dhi Qar cities, Iraq. Materials and Methods: Exposure rates were quantified using a portable Geiger–Müller meter. Frequent readings of gamma dose rates were recorded (82 and 101 nGy h-1). Results: The lowest absorbed doserate was found to be 43.5±17.4 nGyh-1 in Najaf (outdoor e...

Evaluation of D-isomer of 18F-FBPA for oncology PET focusing on the differentiation of glioma and inflammation

Objective(s): L-4-borono-2-18F-fluoro-phenylalanine (L-[18F]FBPA), a substrate of L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1), is a tumor-specific probe used in positron emission tomography (PET). On the other hand, it has not been examined whether another isomer D-[18F]FBPA accumulates specifically in the tumor. He...

Role of low level laser in ameliorating the damaging effects of gamma irradiation on mice liver

Background: Exposure to ionizing radiation is inevitable. Using of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) stimulates tissue repair and reduces inflammation. The objective of the present study aimed at evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of Helium-Neon (He-Ne) laser in stimulating the reparative processes in the liver of mice after whole body gamma-irradiation (WBγ-I). Materials and Methods: Two hundred...

Universal Health Coverage and Primary Healthcare: Lessons From Japan; Comment on “Achieving Universal Health Coverage by Focusing on Primary Care in Japan: Lessons for Low- and Middle-Income Countries”

A recent editorial by Naoki Ikegami has proposed three key lessons from Japan’s experience of achieving virtually universal coverage with primary healthcare services: the need to integrate the existing providers of primary healthcare services into the organised health system; the need to limit government commitments to finance hospital services and the need to empower providers of primary healt...
